The actress was initially famous for the role she played in the 1980s film Tezaab and Tezaab, which she co-starred alongside the veteran actor Anil Koopor. Her next role was in Dil which she shared screen space with Aamir. As a young child growing up in Mumbai's middle class she learned to dance. After her wedding, she took an absence from the industry before returning to the film industry. Dixit was awarded fifteen Filmfare Awards nominations, of which she took home eight. Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award awarded to civilians in India was awarded to her.
